King Protea, Kirstenbosh Botanical Gardens

The land was bequeathed to the Republic of South Africa by Cecil John Rhodes.  In 1913, with the vision of Professor Harold Pearson, the transformation began into the botanical gardens.  Today Kirstenbosch celebrates being a world heritage site with numerous events throughout the year.

The best time to visit Kirstenbosch is during our Spring (September -October), when Kirstenbosch explodes into a splash of colour.

In any case I would still recommend Kirstenbosch all year round.  There are a variety of outdoor and indoor art exhibitions

Between November and April, the Sunday sunset concerts (5.30pm-7pm) are popular with both locals and visitors.  Bring a blanket, picnic, wine and enjoy a variety of local musical talents.  The concert area opens from 4pm and the concert begins at 5.30pm.  Tickets need to be booked in advance for popular artists on Webtickets.

To celebrate the centenary of Kirstenbosch a Tree Canopy Walkway was built to take visitors through the trees giving spectacular panoramic vistas of Table Mountain and the gardens.

For visitors with reduced mobility or less time available that are keen to get an overview of the gardens in an hour, tours are conducted on golf carts on the hour every hour between 9am and 3pm (weather permitting)
