The Book Lounge is known for hosting some of the most interesting book launches and last night was no exception with Allister Sparks in conversation with John Maytham. Sparks has been a political journalist for the last 66 years and has covered all our intense political events through apartheid and the new democracy. I had already read his previous books on political history and referenced him often during my assignments for my history degree so am looking forward reading his memoir.
Sparks refers to one of his many stories in his memoir, the death of Steve Biko and in the audience at the Book Lounge was one of the former journalists on his team, Helen Zille (also former leader of the Democratic Alliance). Over nearly seven decades, Sparks has written about some of the most controversial events as both a local reporter and foreign correspondent.
Whether you live in Cape Town or a visitor on holiday it is worthwhile contacting the Book Lounge (Tel 021 462 2425, booklounge@gmail.com ) and getting onto their mailing list to keep yourself updated about their regular events and book launches.
Thank you very much to Leopards Leap for the wine.
