City and Mini-Peninsula tour

This tour is for guests who would like to learn the intimate history of Cape Town and then spend the afternoon travelling around the Peninsula and not enter the Cape Point nature reserve.

Begin at the oldest building in South Africa (the Castle of Good Hope), with a guided tour and enjoy the Key Ceremony.  We will visit the William Fehr collection and Military museum, before departing on our walking tour of the city.

We will hear the story of how the Cape Town city and community were shaped by the Dutch East India Company and the Oceanic slave trade as we walk passed the City Hall, Adderley street, Groote Kerk and the Slave Lodge.

A stroll along side Parliament and down through the Company Gardens where the Dutch East India Company planted the first fruit, vegetables and vineyards.  On route we will see the Tynhuis, National Art gallery and the South African museum.

An important statue in the Company Gardens is of Cecil John Rhodes and we will find out about his contribution to history, diamonds and politics.

A visit to St George’s Cathedral (Archbishop Desmond Tutu 1986-1996) to find out the significance of this cathedral and the magnificent stained glass windows are not to be missed.

On route to the African market (Greenmarket square) we will pause by the piece of the Berlin Wall and discuss the significance of the end of the Cold War and the impact on the end of apartheid.

Lunch can be taken in one of the street cafes, or we can head out to Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens and dine in the tea room.

From here we will travel down the False Bay coastline and make a stop in the quaint village of Kalk Bay.  Known for their boutique quirky shops, antiques and art galleries, also a great stop for fish n’ chips in the harbour and watch the fishermen unload their catch.

After lunch we will make stop in the historical naval base, Simon’s Town and find out who was the legendary ‘Just Nuisance’.

A further two minutes drive and we will reach Boulders beach and the African penguin colony.  Established in 1984 from a breeding pair this nature reserve has been designed so that you can walk amongst them and not disturb them.

Next we will cross over the Peninsula to the Atlantic Ocean side and drive through the scenic Chapman’s Peak drive.  This famous road was carved into the mountain and opened in 1922.  It is nine kilometres of majestic coastline scenery.

Returning to Cape Town along the Atlantic seaboard of Camps Bay and Clifton, and if time end the day with the views over the city bowl from Signal Hill.
